What is GPRS?
General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a mobile data service available to ACN mobile customers. It allows customers to browse mobile web pages and download items such as ringtones, wallpapers, screensavers and games.
GPRS is the method that the network uses to transfer data to and from your mobile phone; WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) and MMS (Multimedia Message Service) are the applications that use GPRS to transmit and receive data.
WAP services include ZOO, which provides access to ringtones, screensavers, games and wallpaper and other online mobile content. You can explore Zoo via your handset or online via ACN’s Mobile services webpage.
How do I use GPRS?
GPRS will be activated when you access a webpage via your mobile. Many mobile phones can access web pages via a globe button on the keypad
otherwise, it can be accessed via the phone’s menu (consult the manual for your handset for full details). If you experience difficulty using GPRS, contact ACN Customer Service on 1300 881 778.
When GPRS is active you will see an icon on your screen indicating that you’re connected. These icons vary between handsets but may be one of the following:

Please refer to your handset’s user guide to determine which GPRS icon will appear on your mobile.
Tips on how to use GPRS
- GPRS is best suited to using small amounts of data at a time – this is mainly due to the time it takes to download and the potential cost involved.
- It is not recommended that you use GPRS to download full web pages as you would via your computer’s internet browser.
- Your mobile phone should not be used as a modem to download large streaming videos or long documents.
- Where possible you should connect to web pages that are configured for use for mobile phones. Web pages such as MySpace have a MySpace Mobile version which is specifically designed for use with your mobile phone.
- When you finish a GPRS session, make sure that GPRS is not active by checking for the icon on the screen of your handset.
Will my phone be able to download data?
You may wish to refer to the full features list for all currently offered mobile phones on the ACN website or refer to your handset user guide, to check if your handset is GPRS compatible.
How much does it cost?
GPRS and web browsing is charged by the Kilobyte and you should be aware of the pricing for GPRS for your mobile service, which can be found here.
Certain websites also have subscription fees that allow you to access them from your mobile phone, e.g. MySpace Mobile. Please check the pricing for any service you would like to subscribe to before accessing them on your mobile phone.
Downloading ringtones, wall papers, screensavers, games and other applications to your phone will incur content charges that are charged in addition to GPRS browsing charges. If you are downloading these from Zoo, pricing is outlined on the ACN website under Value Added Services for your mobile plan. If you are downloading from an external website or provider, please ensure you are aware of the costs involved before downloading and be aware that if you download from some providers you may be charged for a series of ongoing downloads or charged a monthly subscription fee.
How can I monitor my GPRS usage?
You can check the number of kilobytes you have downloaded through GPRS by looking at your usage meter (sometimes called a ‘data counter’) in the settings menu of your phone. For further instructions on how to do this refer to the user guide for your mobile handset.
How do I activate/deactivate GPRS?
GPRS is currently available once you activate your ACN SIM. You can request that ACN disable GPRS for your mobile service by calling us on 1300 881 778. You can reactivate GPRS at any stage by calling 1300 881 778 or emailing us at enquiries@acnaustralia.com.au.
